Tower of God Returns!

Hey, everyone!

Here’s what’s going in the world of Anime today:

  • Tower of God, a renowned manga series that had its first anime adaption arc aired way back in the Spring of 2020, is finally getting a new season.

  • We may have a new dystopian police drama coming from the same script writer who wrote Psycho Pass.

  • We have yet another video game that any anime lover should have played by now.

To the top of the Tower

If you were an anime fan back in 2020, then you’ve probably heard of Tower of God. With stunning visuals, fun characters, and a mysterious plot that kept engaging us with more questions rather than answers, it rippled across the entire anime community.

With Tower of God being a joint project between Crunchyroll and Webtoons, it can be assumed that much like the first season, the anime will be taking creative liberties in the ways it’s visually represented and how the action scenes flow.

Police Tribe K-9, the child of Psycho Pass

Psycho Pass was a science fiction anime that delved deep into the concept of a dystopian future that invented a way to prevent crime before it happened by arresting people based on the probability that they will commit some type of crime in the near future. And it worked extremely well. In fact, even now, five years after its third and final season aired, Psycho Pass is still the first anime on Google’s “Top Sci-Fi Picks” scroller.

So the hype’s there, even five years later, now that Makoto Fukami and several other of the famous Psycho Pass writers have announced their coming release of a new science fiction police thriller manga, Police Tribe K-9.

From this cover image alone the resemblance to the overall atmosphere that Psycho Pass had coined is astounding. Despite the manga having no official affiliation with it’s parent title, it’s safe to say the manga is seeking to produce the same type of emotional resonance and general vibe that was showcased in Psycho Pass.

Now we know a new manga isn’t what every anime fan has been hoping for. Most of you probably want a series you can binge with mind-blowing animation, professional voice acting, and a catchy score. Sure, these are all things a manga can’t provide. But what it can provide is hope. If the anime community as a whole shows this title some love, we could have a real anime adaptation in a few years. So if you’re a Psycho Pass fan, or just love science fiction, make sure to check out Police Tribe K-9 upon its release in Young Champion’s magazine next week, in March 26th’s issue. You can find an updated list of manga from Young Champion right here.

Nier-ing the End

Nier: Automata is probably one of the very few anime-styled games that managed to break through into the mainstream of Western culture. Nier: Automata released on Steam way back in 2017. With the game being as equally centered around its face paced and addictive gameplay as it is with its heart wrenching and unbearably human storyline, it’s really no wonder the game blew up the way it did.

SQUARE ENIX

To say the game references anime or pulls lines from popular Japanese media would be a lie. Nier isn’t like other games we’ve features in that regard. Instead, Nier Automata simply is an anime, and was an anime long before it got adapted into one in 2023.

Something anime has always held over mainstream media is its raw emotion that it evokes in its viewers. Nier is an anime as well as a game because of its ability to follow through on these emotions, with one fan even writing “the feelings I experienced shall be treasured in my heart,” on the game’s store page.

So if you’ve never played and want to grind out all twenty some of the game’s unique endings, or if you’re looking for a new action anime that’s got another season on the way, go check out Nier: Automata on steam or crunchyroll.
