A Nobody’s Way Up is a new anime based on a light novel of the same name. It was announced a few months ago but now we’re only 2 months away! The anime is about Kaito Takagi, an adventurer in a magical modern-day Japan, and his story of starting at the bottom and working his way up to one of Japan’s best!

But he can’t do it alone!

Cue Sylphy’s arrival. Sylphy is Kaito’s key to growing in strength. He was a simple Slime Slayer with very little strength until he found a Golden Slime, which dropped a servant card upon death. The card summoned Sylphy, a warrior maiden, and together they bounce their own strengths and weaknesses off of each other to grow and fight even more powerful beasts!

Is Kaito Takagi a worthy protagonist? Let’s take a look.

The main complaint about the trailer for the A Nobody’s anime is Kaito himself. It is definitely true that we live in an era of very bland male protagonists that are pushovers and can’t really do anything for themselves, you can see it in almost all of the Isekai genre. Sometimes it’s done well, sometimes it’s so annoying that dropping the show feels like a good choice. People are worried Kaito might be this way..

But where does Kaito fall in?

Luckily we have a manga that we can look to so that our expectations are evened out. Kaito in the manga starts off as someone who can’t fight anything but slimes. Instead of taking a normal job, yes he has the option to do that, he instead spends all day barely making any money fighting slimes. Arguably a weird choice, but it ends up working out. He does have some growth, but the anime is focused more on wholesome moments and comedy, with growth being present but not always visible.

Fun Fact:

The studio that is making the A Nobody’s anime, GEKKOU, is also responsible for the series Isekai One Turn Kill Nee-San and Temple. They are a relatively newer studio that have only really been airing anime for around a year or so, so you should definitely give them a chance.
